Availability, Third Pillar of the Holy Friendship

THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

"So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he tool pity on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length."
- Mark 6:34

The Lord always thought of the welfare of others. God always do. Before they met the crowd, Jesus thought of bringing His Apostles to take some rest for they have just returned from going around the villages which Jesus intended to visit Himself later. They returned with high spirits because they were able to fulfill the mission which he entrusted them to do. So, in return, Jesus wanted to give them a break - away from the people so that they could take a rest for a while.

But the people were like sheep looking for a shepherd and they saw it in Jesus. So they went ahead of Him to where they were going. And Jesus knew that they needed His time. He needed to be available to them.

Availability is an important pillar of the Holy Friendship. It is sharing our precious time, effort and resources for the sake of others: the persons God has entrusted us to serve. As friends of the Lord Jesus Christ we cannot disregard this duty for He directly commanded His Apostles, our fathers in the Faith, to love one another and to manifest this concretely by washing each other's feet!

The Holy Bible records a lot of people who responded to the call of God and the Lord Jesus Christ: patriarchs, prophets, judges, kings, apostles, disciples, and many others. After which, the Church has a lot of men and women who have also answered to their particular vocations: Popes, Bishops and clergy, martyrs, founders of religious Orders, congregations and communities, confessors, heroes of the faith, and more.  Inspired by the Holy Spirit they made themselves available to become instruments of God's love and the Lord's continuing saving act.

The same call is being sounded today - right now - and we are expected to respond in the affirmative. Our availability is very much needed in these times when the truth about God is being disputed and the Church which the Lord has established on earth to continue His saving act is being attacked. Through our availability may we be able to show the world the truth especially through our love for one another because by doing so "the world will know that you are my disciples" says the Lord [see John 13:35].
