This is one of the Stations which do not have a Biblical foundation. The name originally referred to the term "vero icon" or "true image" [Vero = True and Icon = image] "which ordinary language soon made Veronica". Whether there was or wasn't a true person who was named Veronica, we will probably discuss it later. For now let us meditate on the Lord's true image.
Genesis tells us the story of how God created everything which culminated with the creation of man and woman. The creation of man and woman was unique in the story because of all God's creatures, only man and woman have been created in His image and likeness. We are therefore God's true image.
When the Lord Jesus Christ saved us from bondage to sin, He renewed creation and renewed humanity in a special way. While man and woman have been created in God's image and likeness, Christ our Lord left His divinity in order to assume the nature of humanity. God the Son, the Word of God, through whom everything was made, now has immersed Himself among His creatures. Through His sacrifice He renewed everything, especially mankind, so that we have become new creation in Him: and through this the old image and likeness of God that we are was upgraded into the divine being now the bearers of God's life, the divine life, in us which is grace. During creation we become vessels of God's ruah or breath. Now we are temples of His Holy Spirit.
We are the true images of Christ. As His true images, that is, as Christians saved and sanctified by His passion, death and resurrection, we must project Christ in our lives and manifest His saving work in all that we think, say or do that through us others may be saved too. Our beings are more than the clothe which Veronica used to wipe the bloodied face of the Lord. Our beings are living images of the Lord which could inspire others to know, believe and love the Lord Jesus Christ and His Father who has sent Him.
May we become worthy images of the Lord so that the world may believe and so be saved.
