Jesus, Our Light [Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Easter]

JESUS, THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.

"I came into the world as light,
so that everyone who believes in me
might not remain in darkness."

Living in darkness means living under the influence of evil, being in bondage to sin. When our first parents committed the first sin, they brought the entire human race under the power of evil and slavery to sin. Dark indeed was man's life for man was incapable of freeing himself from such a state without the help of God himself [see Acts 4:12; 10:43; Matthew 1:21; John 1: 4-9; 3:16]

Why did man live in darkness due to sin? It is because man was separated from God who is Light himself [see Psalm 139:12; Daniel 2:22; 1 John 1:5]. God is the only true light that can provide man with eternal life, everlasting joy and perpetual bliss [see Psalm 85:12]. It is only God who can offer and give true goodness and happiness [see Matthew 10:28; Mark 10:18; Luke 18:19]. No other person or thing can offer such benefits to mankind. The world may offer a semblance of these goods but not the true goods themselves hence they would easily lead to emptiness, frustrations and desperation [see John 14:27; 16:33]

But with God, everything is pure joy and perfect bliss [see James 1:17]. And the Father, very eager to bring mankind from being separated from Him and be reunited with Him for all eternity, planned and carried out such plan to send His only-begotten Son in order to lead mankind from darkness into His wonderful light [see Isaiah 2:5; 9:2; Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 2:9]

Now the only thing we have to do is to believe in Jesus our Lord as the light which leads us out from the darkness of sin and the influence of evil. It is only in believing and accepting Him can we be freed from our bondage to sin [see Acts 16:31; Romans 10:9; Mark 16:16] for it is only Him who is the true light whom God has sent to brighten up the way back to the Father [see John 8:12; 9:5; 14:6]

Jesus is our light because He points us to the Father, He shows us the way to the Father, He leads along the way, and He himself is our way [see John 14:6]. He doesn't mislead us, nor will He bring us to any other destination [see John 14: 2-3]

Since Jesus Christ our Lord and Friend is Light, we, being His followers and friends, must also become light for He said,

"You are the light of the world"
- Matthew 5:14a

For it is also written,

"The path of the righteous is like the morning sun,
shining ever brighter till the full light of day."
- Proverbs 4:18

and

"... so that you may become blameless and pure,
'children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation'.
Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky."
- Philippians 2:15

And as we remind you with regards to why do we have to pray, we must be constantly connected with the Lord so that our lights may not dim and consequently become dark due to lack of connection to the Source: Jesus himself.

Let us receive Jesus as the Light of our lives that we may also become the light of others.
